Museums at Home

With access to some of the world’s most famous heritage landmarks and galleries on-hold during the Coronavirus pandemic, the world of art and museums has hit back with a very digital response, opening its doors virtually.

The world’s most famous institutions and many smaller museums have filmed and edited even more of their collections to share on-line.   Visiting a museum across the country or in another continent no longer requires a plane ride, but a simple click or app download on a smartphone or screen.

There is now a plethora of art and culture from across the ages to be enjoyed via the internet from the comfort of your own home.  Google Arts and Culture offers the most comprehensive A to Z list of collections, having partnered with over 2,000 global art institutions.  However, if you need some advice on where to start and which galleries to visit online  Travel and Leisure magazine recommends its top twelve tours.  These include; the Guggenheim (New York), National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art (Seoul) and National Museum of Anthropology (Mexico City).

For those art admirers with time on their hands, look at the five hour tour of the Russian State Hermitage Museum on YouTube.  It shows 588 art masterpieces from artists including Raphael, Cezanne, Goya, and a series of sculptures and live performances.

“The joy of the internet is that it lets you beat the crowds.”
