FRIEZE 2023

This week, organisers of Frieze announced highlights of the 2023 editions of Frieze London and Frieze Masters, which return to Regent’s Park next month.  Bringing together leading galleries from 46 countries, and also featuring a citywide programme that accompanies the two leading fairs, the annual event has become a major date in the international art world calendar.

Over 160 galleries will participate in Frieze London, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary.  With solo, group and thematic shows, highlights include:

  • Blindspot Gallery with work by Turner Prize nominee Sin Wai Kin, along with Angela Su and Trevor Yeung who have represented Hong Kong at the Venice Biennale, and Xiyadie, following a recent solo show at the Drawing Center in New York;
  • Sadie Coles HQ with a group presentation that celebrates the fair’s 20th anniversary by mirroring the gallery’s participation in the very first edition, with works by gallery artists who took part in 2003 including John Currin and Sarah Lucas;
  • Pilar Corrias with a solo exhibition by Margate-based artist Sophie Von Hellerman, whose installation draws from the iconic funfair Dreamland;
  • Edel Assanti with new works by artists including Julianknxx, coinciding with his Barbican Curve commission and inclusion in ‘A World in Common’ at Tate Modern.

Highlights of the fair’s Focus section, which presents 34 galleries from 18 countries which have been operating for less than 12 years, include Copperfield with paintings by Larry Achiampong, Llano with work by Débora Delmar, PM8/Francisco Salas with sculptures by Marija Olšauskaitė and HOA who will showcase works by Mariana Rocha alongside Laís Amaral.

And to mark the 20th anniversary, eight internationally acclaimed artists have each been invited to select an emerging artist whose work will receive a solo exhibition at this year’s fair.  Artist-to-Artist includes:

  • Paintings by Margate-based Vanessa Raw, curated by Tracey Emin (Carl Freedman Gallery)
  • Video work by Ayoung Kim, nominated by Haegue Yang (Gallery Hyundai)
  • Fabian Knecht, proposed by Olafur Eliasson (alexander levy)
  • Simonette Quamina, selected by Alvaro Barrington (Praxis)
  • Carlos Villa’s 1980s body-print series, proposed by Anthea Hamilton (Silverlens)
  • New paintings by Deborah Anzinger, nominated by Simone Leigh (Nicola Vassell Gallery)
  • Wantanee Siripattananuntakul, selected by Rirkrit Tiravanija (Gallery Ver)
  • New sculptures and silver gelatin prints by Mark Barker, nominated by Wolfgang Tilmans (Shahin Zarinbal)

With work ranging from the paleolithic era to the 20th century – and celebrating its 11th edition this year – Frieze Masters brings together over 130 galleries.  Highlights include:

  • Salomon Lilian with Portrait of a 50 Year Old Man, signed and dated 1635, by Frans Hals.  The painting has not been displayed publicly in 112 years and will be on view at the same time as the Dutch artist’s survey at London’s National Gallery.
  • Philip Mould & Company showcasing artworks from the Tudor period to the present day by artists including Rosalba Carriera, Boris Vasilyevich Anrep, Simon Verelst, Duncan Grant and Vanessa Bell.
  • Charles Beddington Gallery and Artur Ramon Art showing works by Pablo Picasso, Canaletto, Eppo Doeve and more.
  • Galleria Continua with work by Ai Weiwei, created between 1983 and 1999, and including amongst other iconic pieces Dropping a Han Dynasty Urn and June, 1994

New for this year is Studio, a themed section drawing on the creative spirit tied to places of making.  Curated by Sheena Wagstaff from the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, highlights include a new series of paintings by Maggi Hambling (Frankie Rossi Art Projects in affiliation with Hazlitt Holland-Hibbert), the first major presentation in the UK of work by Arlene Shechet (Pace Gallery in collaboration with Sam Fogg) and a retrospective of Hyun-Sook Song spanning the artist’s career (Sprüth Magers).

Also new for 2023 is Modern Women, a section of solo presentations by women artists including:

  • Works from the 1960s and 70s by Faith Ringgold (ACA Galleries)
  • Works on paper by Brazilian modernist Tarsila do Amaral (Almeida & Dale)
  • Korean artist Kangja Jung (Arario Gallery)
  • Computer-generated graphic drawings by Vera Molnár (Vintage Galeria)

Plus the return of Spotlight, which this year focuses on overlooked works by artists working between the 1950s and 1970s, and Stand Out, a section devoted to challenging traditional hierarchies of media which have become largely obsolete in contemporary art.

And a programme of talks, tours and more!
