FAMM, the first private museum in Europe dedicated to women artists, in now open in Mougins, France.
Presenting over 100 works by more than 80 women artists from around the world, Female Artists of the Mougins Museum – FAMM – is the brainchild of Christian Levett, an art collector for nearly thirty years recognised for his philanthropic commitments in the arts and other causes.
Founded initially by Christian Levett as Mougins Museum of Classic Art (MACM) – giving visitors an opportunity to see antiquities and more recent artworks showing a classical inspiration from The Levett Collection – in 2023 a change of direction was announced. Reflecting the evolution of Christian Levett’s collecting and his wish to increase the visibility of women artists, following a temporary closure MACM would reopen in June 2024 as FAMM.
Regular rotations at the new museum will create access to over 500 works by female artists in The Levett Collection, and the array is expanding. Featured artists for the opening include Berthe Morisot, Mary Cassatt, Leonora Carrington, Lee Krasner, Alice Neel, Louise Bourgeois, Marina Abramovic, Tracey Emin and more. Over four floors, paintings, sculptures and photography by leading women artists marking the major artistic movements from Impressionism to the present day are on display.
Speaking ahead of the opening, Christian Levett said: “Having collected art for a quarter of a century, my tastes have evolved, so I think it’s time for the museum to evolve too. I am looking forward to opening our new museum FAMM, which I am certain will quickly become a must visit destination for art lovers, students, researchers and curators alike.”
